Along with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Final Fantasy VII: Last Order was created as a bonus feature in the Japanese Limited Edition set. Last Order is a short anime film created for fans of the beloved game to demonstrate the events at Nibelheim in a more clear perspective. Last Order brings to Final Fantasy VII fans a vivid description of the occurrences at Nibelheim from a different angle, which was Square-Enix’s intent.
Final Fantasy VII: Last Order took place in two different time periods, one five years ago before the events of Final Fantasy VII and another just before the happenings of the game occurred. The first scene of the short film opened up the scenario for what would be taking place, concentrating on Zack and Cloud’s escape from the Nibelheim Shin-Ra Mansion. The small movie was very nicely done, and Final Fantasy VII fans who watch it were able to recognize parts from the game placed into the anime, which was rather exciting, as well as be given even more information about what really took place during the five years. The battle scenes, few yet pleasing, were designed very well, and even had one sometimes give us a few shockers. The anime was drawn beautifully and very detailed, even to the point of getting down to the nitty-gritty of character and location design.
However, fans devoted to the admired game would be the only crowd to be able to enjoy this brief flick. The almost 30 minute movie was not intended to be viewed from an audience of non-VII players; therefore remarks such as it being ultimately pointless will be said. Yet Last Order was never designed to even have a point, but was only a neat bonus feature for Final Fantasy VII fans to enjoy some of the most important scenes of the game in a clearer, more vivid tone.
Last Order definitely was a pretty nifty bonus feature. Consider it a little gift by Square Enix themselves, allowing us to get the full picture of some of the most memorable moments in Final Fantasy VI

Plot
One year before Final Fantasy VII begins, former SOLDIER 1st Class, Zack, is able to break free of his confinement within Shinra Company, Zack accompanied Sephiroth, Shinra's elite SOLDIER, in the investigation of a malfunctioning mako reactor. During that mission, he bore witness to Sephiroth's descent into madness and the merciless slaughter of the village at Sephiroth's hands.
Though he survived that massacre, he and his friend, Cloud Strife — Final Fantasy VII's main protagonist and a native of Nibelheim — were taken captive when Shinra officials arrived to round up the few survivors and cover up the tragedy to prevent their name from being sullied. Professor Hojo, the Head of Shinra's Scientific Research Division, decided to use Zack, Cloud and the other apprehended survivors in an experiment to test his Jenova Reunion Theory, but after four years of stolen freedom, Zack has escaped from Hojo's lab and taken Cloud with him.
They quickly slip away from Nibelheim, with the intent being to return to Midgar, the heart of Shinra's empire and home of Zack's girlfriend, Aerith Gainsborough. However, Shinra orders their elite espionage and assassination division, the Turks, as well as regular military units to find, and, if necessary, eliminate the two escapees. Yet Tseng, the leader of the Turks, is hesitant to take Zack and Cloud's freedom from them a second time. Conscience-leaden and wracked with conflicting emotions, he orders his subordinates to capture them alive if at all possible.
With Zack and Cloud approaching the end of their year-long trek back to Midgar and the pursuit of the two escapees building to its head, Tseng reflects back on the events that have led to this situation before departing with his subordinates to intercept Cloud and Zack along the last leg of their journey. It is here, on a bluff within sight of Midgar, that fate will take a tragic, unexpected turn, and the events of Final Fantasy VII will begin.
